Since the mid-eighties California Canoe & Kayak Whitewater school has been in operation on the South Fork of the American River. Keith Miller purchased Sierra Kayak School and started on a 30 plus year journey on the South Fork. Over the years CCK has been lucky and privileged to have the top instructors and program directors running our school. Each season brings a new crop of eager students who experience the River up close. The Whitewater Industry has evolved and boats and gear have become more beginner friendly enabling more people to get out on the Rivers in a safe and fun way. Our student to instructor ratio and two day intensive training allows our students to learn the basics and be on their way to running class two rivers. CCK’s demo program gives you the opportunity to go out and practice the skills you have learned in an affordable way. Our retail shops provide a great selection of new and used gear to supply our students with the best equipment as they start their own journey.
It is easy to start exploring rivers the right way with professional instruction from California Canoe & Kayak. Reliable flows and great weather make the South Fork American River one of the best rivers to learn on in the world. Our two day class will cover balance and control of the kayak, self-rescue and safety fundamentals while learning to navigate rapids up to Class II. We emphasize safety, enjoyment and skill acquisition using sit-inside kayaks. This class typically covers the parts of the South Fork from Marshall Gold to Camp Lotus.
